Optional Excursion

Optional Excursion

May 6th

Full day, extended Golden Circle Excursion with local guidance

A 250 km loop, clockwise by bus, stretching from Reykjavik to Þingvellir, then to Geysir and Gullfoss and back to Reykjavik through Sólheimar and Selfoss. See map below. All walks will be on trails but bring warm and rainproof clothing. In Iceland you´ll never know about the weather. Umbrellas are usually not suitable due to commonly strong wind.

08:45 Departure from Grand Hotel

09:25 Arrival at Þingvellir

30 min. walk through Almannagjá where you are located in the crest of the Mid-Atlantic Ridge, right between the North American and Eurasian tectonic plates. We will tell you about the history, the geology and the executions carried out there.

Departure from Þingvellir 10:00

10:50 Arrival at Geysir

40 min. walk in the area of Geysir, the original fountain geyser that all the other geysers are named after. Geysir means “the one who gushes”. Geysir´s little brother Strokkur will be on duty that day, gushing with 6-10 minutes intervals.

Departure from Geysir 11:40

11:50 Arrival at Gullfoss

30 min. walk of the surroundings of the waterfall that was almost turned into a power plant in the 1930´s. Luckily Ms. Sigríður Tómasdóttir an environmentalist threatened to throw herself down the waterfall to stop that vandalism and succeeded.

Departure from Gullfoss 12:25

13:10 Arrival at Sólheimar, Eco Village.

Lunch and guided tour.

Sólheimar is an Eco Village, founded in 1930, where disabled people live and works in a self-sustainable community. The history of Sólheimar is quite remarkable as well as today´s business. They run a café, grow vegetables, make cosmetics and art that is sold in their art shop and welcome tourists into their community that provides support, work and opportunities to grow in a self-sustainable way.

Departure from Sólheimar 16:00

Drive through Selfoss, a newly renovated town center on our way back to Reykjavík.

Arrival at the hotel around 17.00
